Nahant Guesthouse Landscape
The guesthouse landscape unfolds over a dramatic promontory with views across the harbor toward Boston. IDDLA rose to the exciting challenge of incorporating granite steps, paths, terraces and perennial gardens into 15 feet of grade change across this narrow site. Existing concrete block retaining walls were minimized to the extent possible and screened with climbing vines. Two distinct private terraces with different microclimates were designed to let guests customize their outdoor experience.
As the owners use the guest cottage in July exclusively, IDDLA designed spectacular perennial gardens that peak mid-summer. Scented native shrubs and rustling grasses enhance the harbor-side experience and mitigate the steep slope between the new construction and the rock ledge. The new landscape blends seamlessly into this historic 2-acre Nahant estate.
